1. Mamapicks Newsletter – Sept. 29th, 2009

   This is what has been happening over at mamapicks.com this week.  Check out the website for other daily finds.

   Gift Idea: Straws & Connectors Straws & Connectors is my favourite construction toy for kids 4+ and makes for a great birthday gift (only $16.95 @ Mastermind).  The building set was a hit in my Gr. 3 classroom…the kids just loved building structures and multiple kits allowed them to even build large forts.  I love to get this toy for girls because there aren’t many construction toys out there that don’t have BOY written all over them.  The set comes with 230 straws and 100 connectors and hours of busy-busy.  It’s one of my favourites because it is so simple and really allows kids to use their imagination.  If you have a baby at home, this might not be ideal for your household because the connectors are a choking hazard and they do get everywhere.

   

   What To Do This Weekend Join a sleepover @ The ROM (5 yrs.+ with adult).  These fun sleepovers will take place one Friday a month from this weekend until the end of the school year.  Enjoy a backstage pass to the galleries, a special movie screening, speak with the experts and make a souvenir to take home.  Let’s not forget PJ karaoke and a midnight snack before bunking down.  For program details, visit the sleepover registration page.  Groups welcome. Go to the Farmer’s Market at Artscape Wychwood Barns (near St. Clair & Bathurst), Sat. 8am-12pm.  I have heard a lot about Wychwood Barns and hope to check the place out this weekend.   The barn was originally a repair shop for streetcars for the TTC.  The land and buildings were recently re-purposed into an arts centre for artists, environmental organizations, workshops and events.  I hear that the outdoor playground there is awesome and that the kids will have a great time! Sing & dance with Jack Grunsky @ Solar Stage  Children’s Theatre (Yonge & Sheppard, Oct. 4th, ages 3-8).  Jack Grunsky is an award-winning Canadian musical performer.  Enjoy his upbeat and interactive performance this weekend but act quickly because the show is almost sold out.    Free $20 Gift Card @ Winners The catch is that you have to spend $100…but that’s not very difficult.   Winners is always full of fantastic surprises.  Melissa & Doug toys sell for a fraction of the price and their selection of bedding for babies and kids just keeps getting better.   Winners also has a pretty good selection of costumes for Halloween at great prices.   If only the line-ups at the cash registers weren’t always so loooooooong…  On the bright side, it’s during those lengthy line-ups that I re-think the contents of my cart and get rid of  some items that I really don’t need.  Coupon valid until Oct. 20th.

   

   Easy Crafts for a Rainy Day As it pours outside, I am reminded that we all need a good stash of indoor activities to keep us sane this coming Winter.  I blogged about this website when Mamapicks just started out so some of you may already be familiar.  Kids Craft Weekly sends you a newsletter full of easy craft ideas (with photos of the step-by-step process) every week and it’s free.  It’s fabulous…and we are going to make flowers today.  I miss the summer

   

   Save Sophie the Giraffe! Sophie the Giraffe is the best chew toy for teething babies.  I swear.  It’s non-toxic, easy to hold and babies just love it!  However, it’s a bit more pricey than other chew toys ($20) which makes it that much more annoying when your baby drops it from his/her stroller and it vanishes.  Luckily, a clever  B.C. mom designs and sells the Sophie Saver.  The Sophie Saver is a strap that attaches to a stroller or car seat on one end and to Sophie (or another toy) on the other end.  $8 @ Sophiebelle’s shop on Etsy.  Moms are just full of ideas…and some of them carry through.you can also order online or see their booth at the upcoming One of a Kind Show.

   

   Time for Apple Picking! There are so many wonderful farms with apple orchards in Ontario and now is the time to take the kids apple-picking!  If you are sick of Chudleigh’s (like me), and want to find something a bit less busy, check out this website for a directory of great apple-picking spots.  We personally like Applewood Farms.

   What To Do This Weekend The Ontario Science Centre is celebrating its 40th birthday on Saturday, Sept. 26th and you are invited!  Enjoy free admission, free showings of  the IMAX film North of Superior,  hamburgers, hotdogs and juice price under a dollar, birthday cupcakes and more. Springridge Farm’s Harvest Festival (Milton) begins this weekend. There is a 5 Acre Corn Trail Maze, professional puppet shows, wagon rides, dace painting, fun farm yard with sandbox, barn, etc.).  Admission to Harvest Festival: $8 for 2 years of age and old. Come to Queen’s Park on Sunday, Sept. 27th for Canada’s largest book & magazine festival, The Word on the Street.  There will be a marketplace as well as featured authors, poets and storytellers.  Visit the children’s area wich includes reading and activity tents for children 0-11yrs as well as a marketplace for children’s literature.  Sounds like an amazing way to celebrate reading withyour kids!    Pampers on Sale @ Walmart Nothing can make me happier these days.  That’s a little troubling, I know….  Walmart’s 15th Anniversary Sale includes the huge boxes of pampers (100+ diapers, depending on size) for $26.97 (down from $37)!   Sale ends on Oct. 2nd.  Although The Girl might be toilet-trained by the time we get to the fourth box, I figure that I can always use the 90 day return policy.

   Alphabet Photography My best find from the recent Cabbagetown Arts & Crafts Fair was Alphabet Photography.  Inspired by the book Alphabet City, photographer Jennifer Blakeley spent 3 years traveling North America in a quest to complete her extensive portfolio of everyday objects that resemble letters of the alphabet.  You can purchase any set of letters to make up any word or name.  I bought my son the letters of his name and he was fascinated!  This gift can become a timeless part of any child’s room but is even more suitable for adults (i.e. the words love or family in a family room would look classy).  The studio is located in Niagara Falls but you can also order online or see their booth at the upcoming One of a Kind Show.

   

   Britax Car Seat Sale I love the Britax brand of car seats because of their top safety ratings and the child’s comfort in the seat.  I measure a child’s comfort by how far their head dangles down when they fall asleep in the car.  Have you ever spent an hour in the front passenger seat but with your hand holding up your sleeping toddler’s head in the back seat?  Not so great.  With the Britax Roundabout or Marathon, you will never have to do that…I promise.  Dearborn Baby (near Yonge & Steeles) is having a one-day Britax Car Seat Sale on Saturday, Sept. 26th.  Savings range between $20-70 depending on the seat.  St. John’s Ambulance car seat installers will be on site to professionally install your seat for an additional $20.

   Pinkalicious Ticket Giveaway! Pinkalicious is a wonderful off-Broadway musical, opening in Toronto on October 10th!  The play is based on the popular children’s book “Pinkalicious” by Elizabeth & Victoria Kann, about a girl who just can’t stop eating pink cupcakes and ends up at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis.  At first, turning pink from head to toe seems like a great thing but soon, Pinkalicious has to find a way to get out of this predicament! This fun musical will run at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts from October 10th – March 21st, 2010.   Check here for tickets and show times.  There will be a performance on Thanksgiving Day and Family Day too.  I think this is a great way to introduce your child to live theatre!  The play is suitable for ages 2-10.    Baby Safe Feeding Teether If your baby is ready to eat fruit but is not old enough to eat independently and safely, the teething feeder is the perfect solution!  Just place pieces of apple, melon, pear or whatever fruit is appropriate and watch them “gum” away without the risk of choking.  The mesh bag keeps big chunks from going through.  Furthermore, if your baby is teething, frozen pieces of watermelon or banana are sure to sooth his/her gums.  You will see how excited your baby will be to munch independently.  I recommend purchasing extra mesh bags because they are not so easy to clean.  Made by Sassy and available @ Toys R Us for $5.99.

   

   Book of the Week(ish) I love this book because it’s both educational and fun.  A great gift for letter-savvy kids who are 3+.  This alphabet book comes with foam rectangles and arcs with which your child can construct every letter of the alphabet…and there is a little mesh bag to keep the pieces in.  A new letter is introduced on every page and little characters try to build the letter using the same shapes as in the foam kit.  Constructing letters can help kids learn their ABCs more easily.  This book is a gem!  Find it at Indigo.

   

   What To Do This Weekend Black Creek Pioneer Village (Jane & Steeles) is having its 53rd Annual Pioneer Festival.  There will be all kinds of demonstrations, horse-drawn wagon rides, a variety of foods and more.  The festival takes place on Saturday, Sept. 19th, 10am-4:30pm. Whittamore Farm’s Pumpkinland (Steeles & Markham Rd.) is already open!  Aside from the usual fun at this farm, from now until Oct. 31st, you and your family will also enjoy choosing pumpkins, wagon rides through the haunted forest and best of all,  Farmer Frank shoots and catapults pumpkins to unbelievable lengths at the Pumpkin Cannon Show which runs several times each weekend day.  We saw this show last year and it was so much fun…but it was cold so I would recommend enjoying Pumpkinland while the weather is still nice and warm.    Printable Magnetic Meal Chart Giving kids an active role in meal planning can make life a little easier.  If you are already dreading making lunches, this printable meal chart may help.  You can print out the chart on a magnetic sheet (sold at places like Staples).  Type out the lunch choices on the ready-made labels and print those out on a second magnetic sheet.  Cut out the labels and post them on your weekly chart.  If you don’t have a magnetic surface in your kitchen (damn those stainless steel appliances!), you can print out the chart on regular paper.  I use this chart for breakfast with pictures on the labels (for my toddlers).  It has been my best strategy for getting my picky eater to eat.  He knows what he is having for breakfast every day and sticks to his choices readily.  Thank you Martha Stewart!

   

   What To Do This Weekend Cabbagetown Art & Craft Sale has to be my favourite event of the year.  I love outdoor art festivals and I love Cabbagetown.  This festival is quite big and aside from the amazing artists who showcase their work,  there are always tons of folks with children and dogs who come out and have fun.  Riverdale Farm is on site and the kids can see the animals.  Corn on the cob is at its best here.  Guess you know where I am going to be… Solar Stage Children’s Theatre (Yonge & Sheppard) presents the interactive story of Rumplstiltskin starting this weekend (until Oct. 3rd).  The play is appropriate for ages 3-10.  This Saturday only, tickets are $11 ea. The Butterfly Migration Festival sounds amazing for nature lovers!  It takes place at Tommy Thompson Park (Leslie & Lakeshore Blvd).    Observe migratory  Monarch Butterflies as they prepare to head South.   This festival is part of a series of province-wide conservation-focused, family-friendly action and education events sponsored by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in partnership with Ontario Nature, LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests) and the Bruce Trail Conservancy.    What Knobs Can Do!    The Gems of West Queen West!

   I don’t get to go downtown very often but when I do, my favourite area to explore is West Queen West.  I start my walk on Queen and Bathurst and stroll to Trinity Bellwoods Park.  The stores in this area are so unique.  Lots of artsy stuff, original fashion, lovely furniture stores and lots of great finds for kids.  The things you find here, you won’t find anywhere else.  Stores here open rather late and are closed on the odd day so if you have something specific in mind, best to call ahead to check their schedule.  Check the website for the 3-part series.

   What To Do This Weekend Enjoy the first annual Shakespearience Festival at Todmoren Mills.  Performances, workshops and vendors.  For kids, there will be Shakespearean style face-painting, workshops, colouring contest and costume exhibits.   Check the website for a complete schedule and map. The Toronto African Dance Festival takes place at Yonge & Dundas  Square this weekend.     Battery Operated Nasal Aspirator I know this looks  like a torture device…but really, this gentle gadget was one of the most useful things I bought when my daughter was an infant.  Her nose always seemed to be full and when it came to feeding and breathing, it was very difficult for her to do both at the same time.  With the push of a button, all that snot was sucked out.  Other nasal aspirators require coordination and often don’t do the job.  You can work this aspirator with with one hand while keeping your squirming baby still with the other.  A little loud for my taste, but it gets the job done instantly and your baby can breathe again.  I found this great product by BebeSounds at Walmart!

    Book Slings I love this idea!  A fabric bookshelf  that hangs on curtain rods making books visible and inviting.  This artsy mom of a 3-year-old was inspired but the amount of time it took her daughter to choose a book from a regular bookshelf.   It’s important for kids to see the front covers of books and decorating a room this way conveys a very positive message about reading.  Different fabrics available and can be personalized with your child’s initial.  Check out Penny Carnival’s Shop.

    Table Top Playhouses We celebrated our anniversary this weekend trying to enjoy brunch with the family.  Five adults, two kids.  No one sat for more than five minutes at a time as we all tried to mind my children and have a meal.  At one point, the kids were playing ever so quietly under the table and we all managed to have a conversation.  I thought to myself…wouldn’t it be nice if a family friendly restaurant designed tables that are like playhouses?  Parents sit and eat, kids play underneath.  While there is no such restaurant (anyone??), I did find someone who makes such playhouses!  Miss Pretty Pretty can create a playhouse to fit any size table.  Many playhouse themes available (such as the CupCakery, Royal Castle or Farm) and custom orders are always welcome.  Playhouses range $90 – $150 US.

    

    Fun Times at the Bata Shoe Museum There were so many wonderful outing to write about but due to the strike, many activities have been canceled.  Let’s hope for a resolution soon.  If you are looking for something fun to do this weekend and the weather continues to be iffy, this might be great for your family.  The Bata Shoe Museum has two fun weekend options.  On Saturday afternoons (11am-4pm), join Saturday Shananigans as you and your family explore the galleries and make shoe-themed crafts.  In July, the theme is Pirates!  On Paint-A-Clog Sundays (12pm-4pm) visit the museum and paint a mini-clog, try on shoes and explore the galleries.  A clog costs an extra $1.  These weekend family activities are recommended for ages 3-9.  Have fun!

    Crooked Houses Did you watch Jon & Kate Plus Eight last night?  To be honest, I was more intrigued by the construction of the kids’ new playhouses than the deconstruction of the Gosselin marriage.  I love the concept of letting kids design their own little house.  In case you are wondering, a custom Crooked House like those built for the Gosselin kids costs upwards of $5000.   Ba!  The company was established by two handy and brilliant dads.  Take a look at the website for more info.

    Vitamin D (in just one drop!) Health Canada recommends that healthy breastfed infants receive a Vitamin D supplement.  Most moms, including myself, use D-V-Sol Vitamin D drops.  Many babies don’t mind the drops at all but mine had a difficult time tolerating the amount and taste.  When my daughter was born, I found Ddrops (The Sunshine Vitamin in Just One Drop!) in the health section of my local Shoppers Drugmart.  This product is great because it is more concentrated and offers the proper daily dose (400 IU) in just ONE drop and it tastes like water.  I showed it to my pediatrician and he said that it’s just as good as the other brands.  Ddrops also come in an adult dose of 1000 IU so make sure to get the right dose for your baby.

    

    This Weekend: A Festival @ The Shops at Donmills Anthropologie opened its doors in Toronto and at that moment I felt complete.  But that’s not the only reason I love The Shops at Donmills.  If you haven’t been to this new & classy outdoor mall, you are truly missing something!   One hundred retail stores and services, great restaurants, outdoor patios,  and a grassy area for the kids to let loose.  This weekend (June 26th-28th) come enjoy The Festival in the Square with your family.  Featuring live music, buskers and special guests.   Located at the corner of Donmills Road and Lawrence Ave. East.  (and btw, they have great family bathrooms).

    

    The Right Space Between Siblings? Three years between siblings used to be pretty standard.  Does anybody else feel like 18 months is the new 3 years?  With ‘two under two’, I often wondered about the best spacing between kids.  Parenting.com recently featured a great article about all that is good and all that is less with ‘two under two’, ‘three years apart’ and ‘more than four’.   A great read despite the fact that life rarely lets you stick to a plan.
